Quick Question: Should I Use the Smith Machine or Free Weights if I Want to Get Stronger?

Two certified personal trainers weigh in.

Having lived in cold-weather regions the past four winters (mainly NYC, Lake Placid, NY, and Salt Lake City), I consider myself a winter gear connoisseur of sorts. Some sage winter wisdom ahead of the chilly season: Be bold and start cold (if you’re toasty before you even get moving, you *will* sweat out your layers and be miserable), wool is the GOAT for warmth, and yes, you absolutely should invest in a puffer jacket before the first flurries begin to fall. And if you need an expert rec, Athleta’s Whisper Featherless Puffer Jacket (now $139)—which has kept me warm for three straight seasons now—is on super sale right now.

Out of all the hundreds of “fall favorites” discounted during Athleta’s pre-holiday sale, it’s this coat you should snag STAT. You might be wondering, “How is this thing so cozy?” Unlike traditional down jackets made with standard goose or duck down, this puffer utilizes sustainable synthetic materials that mimic the fluffiness of feathers without the ethical baggage. No birds were harmed in the making of your winter armor, which is a win for our feathery friends and your conscience. Instead, Athleta’s entire Whisper collection (which includes a parka and a vest) is insulated with recycled nylon to provide, as the brand puts it, “all of the cozy with none of the bulk.” Indeed, it is warm and it is lightweight, a win-win for frigid days when you’d like to not feel like a walking marshmallow. It’s also water-repellant, so if you’re worried about snow and drizzle sogging it down, don’t be.

Its design is sleek and flattering, tailored enough to give you shape while still allowing for ample layering underneath. I particularly like the high-low hem in the back which elevates its look just a smidge. TBH some puffers just look… sloppy. And I’m never one to sacrifice comfort for vanity, but there are times (they’re rare, but they do exist!) when I don’t want my jacket to kill my outfit’s vibe. This one doesn’t at all. So if you’re a city-dweller who needs a commuting coat that’s warm but still looks put together, this is your guy.

Add in all the lil’ features that take a coat from good to great (spacious pockets, an adjustable bungee hem on the hip, a quilted stand collar to keep the cold out) and you’ve got yourself a winner on all fronts.

So, is this puffer jacket worth the splurge? Absolutely. Given it’s 30 percent off its regular price, I’m beeeeegggging you to add it to your carts because it really is worth my hype :).
